PhD exchange programme
As part of its internationalization plan, Sciences Po encourages the immersion of its doctorate and post-doctorate students in international research networks.
Sciences Po’s Doctoral School and its Center for the Americas have developed a grant for doctorate and post-doctorate students wishing to pursue research under an exchange programme with the United States. Through this programme, our students are sent every year to the great social science research centers of our North American partner universities, while we welcome their students in turn.
All research within this programme is not for credit. You will however be given (with the permission of its relevant professors) access to a wide range of courses, seminars, and workshops offered in the different graduate schools.
It is thus imperative that you consult the course offerings of your chosen partner university and to contact its professors before your arrival on campus.
Please, consult the details of agreements : university, departments, admission procedure.
Your application must consist of:
Candidate form (fr)
Cover letter in English containing the reasons for your research abroad and your choice of American partner university
CV in English
Research project in English (5 pages maximum)
2 letters of recommendation in English, one of which must be written by your thesis director
TOEFL result (or any other evidence of your English level)
Your last transcript and its translation in English

Each year, the Doctoral school welcomes students from partner universities for a one-year exchange programme. These students are offered full-time student status at Sciences Po, free computer and library access, and the opportunity to work under the supervision of a distinguished personal advisor designated according to their field of research. They also have access to a personal office space.
Graduate students can also have the opportunity to teach seminar classes at the undergraduate level, in French, in English and sometimes in some other language.
All exchange students are also invited to take part of the Centre for the America’s various academic events (lectures, luncheon seminars, debates, conferences), as well as those organized by other research centres at Sciences Po.
To apply to the Doctoral Exchange Programme at Sciences Po, please contact the international office of your home university.
